Joint Thesis

Students wishing to collaborate and produce a joint thesis must consult their individual advisors. At the end of the thesis preparation semester and no later than the first week of the thesis semester, the students must prepare a petition to the Office for Graduate Education (OGE) that includes:

  • One paragraph describing the unique contributions of student A to the thesis project
  • One paragraph describing the unique contributions of student B to the thesis project
  • One paragraph describing the joint contributions of both students

The proposal should be attached to one graduate student petition form listing both students’ names and signed by their thesis advisors. The petition is then submitted to arch@mit.edu, for approval by the department's Academic Administrator before being sent to the OGE for final approval.

Follow the degree-specific (e.g., SMArchS) thesis preparation and guidelines.

See the template for the joint thesis title page.

The two students produce one thesis and both students sign the title page.
